Psoriasis

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a genetic condition that runs in families and causes round scaly red patches and even thicker plaques on the skin. Although knees and elbows are the most commonly affected areas, psoriasis can occur anywhere on the skin including the skin folds, nails and even the scalp may be affected by psoriasis. Psoriasis can itch and lead to discomfort, and psoriasis skin patches can be a source of embarrassment for some patients. Although psoriasis is a life-long disease that cannot be cured, there are a multitude of treatments that can control and clear psoriasis. Psoriasis can sometimes be difficult to diagnose and may be mistaken for eczema, therefore, seeing a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation is important. The dermatologist can discuss with you the treatments options including topical steroid and nonsteroid creams, medical light box phototherapy, oral medications (such as Soriatane and Otezla), as well as injectable biologic drugs (such as Humira, Cosentyx, Taltz, Tremfya, Stelara).
